Travelling with Linda Charles

Thank you for inviting me to speak about my second favourite topic - travelling. I love to travel and believe it tests many a relationship!

A few years ago I travelled the Great Ocean Road with a group of friends. We had never travelled together before, although we had known one another for years and the trip took months to organise because we all had to fit in with one another's requests and various needs.

It turned out being the best trip ever!  In my twenties I backpacked on my own and met people along the way who are still friends today, but to travel with friends I knew socially for years somehow seemed a little different. We saw another side of one another and despite our differences, would do it again in a heart beat.

We met up in Melbourne, and with a hired car started our trip each taking a turn to drive. Our accommodation at every stop was a home with a bedroom each (a stipulation from all of us!).

We set a daily budget and stuck to it - best value ever with everything being shared four ways.

The Great Ocean Road coastline was wild and very windy. The coastline was very different to what we knew in New South Wales - the vegetation made the difference and in places it was a long way to walk to get to the beach. The scenery was breathtaking and at each point we saw the same travellers at earlier points of interest. When we investigated the trip we saw there was a short version and a long version - we took the longer version because we thought the chance of returning would be rare.

For us the townships made it. Each one was different - Torquay, Angelsea, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Warnambool and Port Fairy. We lunched on the local food, and had an evening drink watching the sunset at each location.

We fell in love with each town and vowed if ever we did the trip again we'd stay longer in the townships. There was so much to see. It took us two weeks to do and spent time in South Australia and ended the trip in Adelaide.

Adelaide is such a peaceful and laid-back town, it's the perfect place to end a holiday. Adelaide has everything you need, and there appears to be no rush or angst, and it's beautiful. It has the beach, the bright lights if need it and is surrounded by the beautiful Adelaide Hills.

Adelaide itself and  the surrounding countryside is a definite must return. We loved the history and the quirky stories we heard from the locals about the early settlers in the region. It pays to talk to people you never know what gems you hear.

In fact, just writing this blog has refreshed my memory of that trip and I'm tempted to bring out the map and look at taking the in-land route to Adelaide and visit new townships and revisit some others that hold a special place for me.

Thank you for the invite to write this blog. I’ve been fortunate to be part of the https://bindarracreekromance.com/a-town-reborn/ and have just released the third book in the series – No Looking Back. It can be found on Amazon - https://amzn.to/303nrQW

About the book:

Sometimes it’s good to take a risk…

Hannah McKenna loves working with horses and is trying hard to keep it altogether after her first horse syndication deal turns sour. Since then she’s been careful and played life straight, and has had enough. She runs into trouble when she meets Blake Hudson – the man who put together the failed deal – who rescues her when she takes a nasty tumble from a horse.

Blake Hudson is known as Mr Nice Guy, but there are dark shadows in his past. He’s the dealmaker, the perfect go-between who puts together horse syndications and once the deal is done he moves on. Problem is, Hannah is the exception and he can’t keep away, but fears she will walk if she knew the truth about his past.

He hadn’t bargained on dealing with a mischievous third party called attraction.

When she discovers the truth, both realise they could lose everything, including each other.

Linda Charles has
been reading romance since high school. Her reading life started very early,
but changed direction after she read Gone
with the Wind
. She was born in Sydney and spent her teenage years
in drama classes, and then taught Speech & Drama for many years.  She
still loves to go to the theatre, but her plan was always to write. Linda lives
in Newcastle and when she's not writing, she can be found walking, browsing the
bookshops or planning her next holiday.

Sigh Worthy Swiss Lakes with Annie West

Thanks, Nas, for the invitation to write another travel piece for your blog. It took me no time at all to decide on a location to write about – Swiss lakes! And for the usual reasons – mainly that they’re so pretty, usually with a mountain backdrop, the sort of location most of us would like to visit one day.

Photo Copyright Annie West
Plus I was lucky enough to make a trip to Switzerland earlier this year so I have some photos to share – always a good thing. And finally because I was thinking about my just released book (Demanding His Desert Queen) and, contrary to what you’d expect, it starts by a lake in Switzerland! J Definitely something unexpected for a sheikh romance.

As there’s only room today for a brief overview I thought I’d just touch on some of the reasons these are worth a visit. Let’s begin with the scenery. Truly, the combination of lakes and mountains together makes for memorable locations. Here’s my view when I stayed in the small town of Brienz on the edge of Lake Brienz.

Photo Copyright Annie West

That’s an easy drive south of the capital, Berne. I took so many photos from my balcony, at different times of the day and in different weather, and found it was gorgeous all the time, even in rain!

The Swiss are incredibly proud of their country. You can see
that here with all the Swiss flags decorating this tourist boat. That’s one of
the things I enjoyed about Switzerland, it was so Swiss! From the picturesque wooden houses in the countryside, to
the cheese fondues and chocolate, there was so much local charm.

Photo Copyright Annie West

Here’s a taste of that local charm, again in Brienz, in the old part of town, with traditionally made wooden homes leading down to the lake.

Photo Copyright Annie West

Then of course there are the castles. Did you know that Switzerland has lots of castles? I think my favourites are on waterfront. This one is on Lake Thun and can be used as a wedding venue. Now, wouldn’t that be fun?

Chateau Chillon Photo Copyright Annie West

Or, on a larger scale, here’s the famous Chateau Chillon on
the eastern corner of Lake Geneva. There might be bustling cities further
around the lake but here it’s all history and scenery (and tourists).

Photo Copyright Annie West

And if relatively peaceful lakeside scenery isn’t for you, you
can choose bustle. The city of Lugano is busy and expensive (the old centre is
jam packed with expensive brand stores). It spreads out along the shoreline towards
Italy and attracts lots of visitors. I was fascinated to see this floating
beach platform for bathers since the only ‘beach’ was small and on the far side
of the town.

Of course, I’ve only just mentioned a couple of Swiss lakes in
this whistle stop tour. There are so many more to explore. Perfect for armchair
travelling if you don’t plan on a trip. I hope you’ve enjoyed these.

Suzanne Gilchrist on Travelling!

Although in recent years I haven't done a lot of travelling, what I love about seeing new places is the chance to discover how other people live. I'm particularly interested in architecture and history, so anything historical has my attention. Here are some pics of various places I've visited both in Australia and overseas.
A recent trip to Western Australia gave me the opportunity to visit some convict era buildings, in particular The Freemantle train station.

And this beautiful church which unfortunately was closed and I was unable to peek inside.

In my younger years, I was lucky enough to spend three weeks exploring Bali and came away impressed with the beautiful people and their way of life. Here is a shot of a wonderful piece of architecture and culture in Bali - a traditional water palace in Ubud and a historic temple gate. I love the attention to detail and the rich culture imbued with each piece of architecture .

And this is a picture of Balinese farm house up in the mountains. My girl friend and I were invited to spend some time with a Balinese family in their very small and primitive home. They were so generous with the little they had and afterwards we travelled through the mountains on motorbikes. A fabulous holiday I'll never forget.

A few years ago, I visited the US on two separate visits spending time in the Florida Keys and also visiting the state of New England. Such an amazing contrast between hot and cold lol, although I was lucky to visit Rockport in late spring. I love how the Americans use timber when building their homes (compared to Aussies who favour bricks and tiles). Some houses reminded me of doll houses although on a much larger scale!

What I loved about the Florida Keys (apart from the snorkelling with sharks and kayaking) were the quaint canals. There was one behind my brother's house and I enjoyed many an early morning paddling down the waterway and watching the varied birdlife.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see inside Hemingway's house but here it is from the outside.

And just to round off a short glimpse into some of my journeys, I'd like to finish with a house built underground. I've been to Cooper Pedy twice both times when travelling around Australia and both times it was so hot, just breathing seemed an effort. However once inside an underground house it was deliciously cool.

What's your favourite place you discovered in your travels?
Thanks so much for hosting me here today.

Travel to California with Juanita Kees

Hello, dear readers and welcome aboard my whirlwind world tour. I’ve been blessed enough to visit a few exotic destinations in my lifetime. From the samurai palaces of Japan to the wild plains of Africa, I have been inspired by history and scenery to write stories. Exotic islands aside, there is no destination more exciting or glittery than Las Vegas, right? But more on that later.

Ripley's Canada

In December 2018, I returned to the USA to celebrate Christmas and a ten-year reunion with family. Our first stop was, of course, Disneyland, California. I got to be a kid again. Yes! I spent five days grinning like a fool every time I saw a Disney princess or Mickey or Minnie. Disneyland truly is a happy place and it was a great start to our four week-long vacation. And no visit to Los Angeles is complete without a stop at Universal Studios. What an experience. I got chased by Zombies, watched a variety show, ate freshly made donuts from a 50’s-style diner and took a tour of the backlot. And with book 1 of Calhoun Customs Garage, Overdrive, in my hand and book 2, Fast Lane in my head, I headed right for….Yep, Radiator Springs and the racetrack.

Radiator Springs

Next stop: Vegas. From the 52nd floor of the Vdara Apartment Hotel, we had a fabulous view of the strip. So much had changed in the ten years since we’d been there last. This time we actually made it down to Fremont Street to discover the old Vegas. If you want to be transported back in time, Fremont Street is the place to be. Aside from the usual activities on the strip, I got to fly in a helicopter across the Grand Canyon, met Cory from Pawn Stars, visited Rick’s Restorations and got ‘Tanked’! And how could I pass up on a visit to the M&M’s shop when Car 18 is still on the floor? Trinity Calhoun would be proud. Probably the most exciting part of our stay in Vegas was the visit to the Mob Museum in the old courthouse. Wow, what an experience that was! I came home with so many stories in my head after that tour.

Our next destination on the way to Canada was New York. Finally, after years of dreaming about it, there I was in midtown Manhattan with a view of the Empire State building from my window. All the places I’d seen on television came to life.

San Francisco Street Art

Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, Ellis Island, the statue of Liberty…I was left breathless at the beauty of a cold and wintery city. The most memorable of all our stops in New York has to be the 9/11 Memorial. Hauntingly beautiful in its simplicity, the vibe of loss and sadness still hung heavily in the air, the impact of how many names are inscribed on that wall around the cascading water hitting hard.

Ground Zero

Then came Canada. Our stay here was short, our intent to spend Christmas with family before flying to San Francisco. We packed as much as we could into four short days. A visit to Ripley’s Aquarium blew me away. What an amazing place and not at all what we expected. I finally got to visit the Mennonite Amish community in St Jacobs and bought a beautifully crafted quilt. I loved this little town so much where simplicity is the key to life and the smell of freshly baked bread teased my senses.

All too soon it was time to say goodbye to the family and hello San Francisco. Of all the cities in the USA, San Francisco is the one that makes my heart sing. From Pier 39 all the way across the Bay to Alcatraz, I love this place with all my soul. The most exotic place we visited here was Muir Wood where an early episode of Star Wars was filmed. I could imagine the ewoks popping up out of the woods and fighting off the storm troopers. Chinatown never fails to amaze me with the architecture and street art. Every alleyway told us a different story and the myriad of shops full of gadgets and souvenirs kept us entertained for hours. And perhaps one day, I’ll be able to buy that dream home in Sausalito. Unfortunately, NASCAR season was over and I didn’t get to visit any racetracks on our journey, but that gives me a good reason to go back again.

Thank you for travelling with me today and I hope you’ll enjoy Trinity and Reece’s race to a happy ever after in Fast Lane.

Travel to Buenos Aires with Rania Battany

My husband and I arrived in Buenos Aires in the heart
of summer, against everyone’s advice. Even the Argentinian’s leave their
capital city in summer. The days were relentlessly hot, and the evenings were
not much better. And still, I loved every moment of the six weeks we spent
there.

The city was a mish-mash of the old and the new, the
beautiful and the chaotic. Art and culture oozed from every corner. Graffiti
stained walls weren’t vandalism, but magnificent pieces of artwork. Artists of
all kind took to the streets, either as part of a mile-long market or on their
own, with handmade jewellery, paintings, drawings, sculptures. The people were
beautiful and fashion conscious. Men and women alike dressed in the latest
trends, their hair immaculately styled and make-up perfectly applied.

During the day, flocks of tourists gathered at Eva
Peron’s gravesite at the Recoleta cemetery, and we marvelled at the magnificent
sculptures honouring those that had passed. On Sundays, we ambled through the
market in San Telmo, which boasted an array of knick-knacks, artwork, antiques,
plus so much more. Performers kept us all entertained, and the empanadas kept
our bellies full. Tango dancers took to the streets in La Boca. The distinguished
music played in the background as we wandered the cobblestone roads and admired
the brightly painted buildings.

The city came alive in the evening. People drank wine,
kids stayed up late, lovers walked hand in hand … they socialised, laughed,
hung out. Around nine p.m., when people were heading out for dinner, the scent
of barbequed meat—the main cuisine on offer at any given restaurant—filled the
streets. Restaurants grew crowded, and the sound of a thousand voices rang out
as they talked and laughed over a shared meal.

Buenos Aires is a city that blends the faded days of European splendour with Latin spice and passion. Rich with art and culture, food and music, this city will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Greek Island Dreaming! Corfu with Annie West

Ever dreamed of escaping to a gorgeous
Greek island? I have! And I’ve written about it too. Greece is one of my
favourite romance settings. I figure if I can’t be there in person, I can at
least visit through the pages of a story.

Interestingly, being Australian, I’ve
never been to Greece in mid summer when most of the other tourists visit,
because we have plenty of sun and beaches at home. I’ve visited mainly in the
cooler months to do things other than swim or sit by the sea. But last
April/May I was lucky enough to stay on Corfu, a destination I’ve wanted to visit
since my teens, just as the weather was warming up. It was perfect weather for
sitting outside to eat and drink and watch the sun go down and even (for some)
warm enough to swim.

Corfu is to the west of the Greek
mainland, quite close to the border with Albania. It’s large and has a
fascinating history. It was even ruled by the British for a while, at which
time cricket was introduced and there’s still a cricket pitch in Corfu Town,
though I wonder how often it gets used. The island is large enough to have all
sorts of amenities but once out of Corfu Town you’ll find yourself in villages
or smallish coastal resorts, or in the middle of olive groves. I particularly
enjoyed exploring the narrow little roads winding around huge Mt Pantokrator
that dominates the island. There are tiny villages, some crumbling as people
move into bigger centres, swathes of wildflowers and the most stupendous views
down to the sea.

It’s a very green island but once out in
the countryside you realise how much hard work is involved in making a living
off the land. One of the things I particularly loved was seeing the colourful
gardens even in the smallest plots, so bright and cheery. And the colour of the
water! As an author you’d think it would be easy for me to describe it but the
trouble was it varied from aquamarine to turquoise, teal and azure. Being an
island the beach is close no matter where you are, on one side of the island
sand, and on the rest, large pebbles (which we Australians really aren’t used
to).

The food was terrific. If you visit, try
the local seafood, and the vegetable dishes in particular are wonderful, so
flavourful. I found it interesting that as well as the usual lemon and olive
groves, the Corfiotes grow kumquats and are famous for their kumquat liqueur. I
was also offered rose petal liqueur and that was lovely, though sweet enough
that one tiny glass was plenty.

The economic crisis in Greece has hit
Corfu and its loveliness was in some places a little shabby as if there wasn’t
a lot of public money about. I was told that was the reason its archaeological
museum had been closed for years. Nevertheless, it’s a gorgeous place and we
met so many pleasant people, proud and pleased to see us enjoying their lovely
island.

One of the best things for me about the
trip to Corfu was that it provided inspiration for my new story! Quite a few of
the scenes in the book are set in places I visited. (My April newsletter has
some relevant photos. If you’re interested in receiving it, just drop me a line
at annie@annie-west). So I found it particularly easy to visualise the settings
for ‘Wedding Night Reunion in Greece’ and dive right into the story.

If you’re planning a Greek island escape, consider Corfu. I’m hoping to head back one day for another visit and maybe stop by some of its near neighbours. Who knows, I might leave with ideas for several stories!

Heartbreaking Prague with Jane Godman

I only had two days in the Czech capital and to do Prague
justice, you really need longer to appreciate its beauty.

My visit started at Prague Castle. The approach to
cathedral-crowned, fortified hill is a long upward sloping road lined with
tourist shops. Once there, it was like stepping back in time and the crowds
gathered for the changing of the guards. You do have to pay to get onto the castle
premises, but the ticket lasts for two days.

Highlights of the hill include St Vitus Cathedral, whose
towers dominate the city skyline, and you can climb one of the towers. There
are also several exhibits about the history of the castle, and the palace
buildings. A row of old low houses called the Golden Row once housed the city’s
famous author son, Franz Kafka.

Following the Golden Lane down from the castle leads to the Charles
Bridge. It is the only pedestrian bridge that crosses the Vltava River. It is a
popular tourist destination and there are usually peddlers of art and musicians
along its length.

From the bridge, you can get to the Old Town. Wenceslas
Square is an enormous space lined with the well-known retailers that you can
find in any European city. There is also the National Museum, which is the
center point of much of the revolutionary history of the city.

Josevov is the Jewish district in the old town of Prague.
There is a cemetery and the Old New Synagogue as well as a museum.

Not to be missed is the Astronomical clock. When it chimes
the hour, the window of the clock in the upper part shows the twelve apostles
moving. Simultaneously, the surrounding sculptures that adorn the device are
set in motion. One of the moving figures carrying an hourglass in his hand
personifies Death. Another moving figurine has a mirror, representing Vanity.
Other figurines are the Astronomer, the Philosopher, and the Chronicler.

When it comes to food, try Prague’s open-faced sandwiches. I
tried one with Prague ham, potato salad, and hardboiled egg, another with
celery root salad and tomato, and one with beetroot, cheese, and a walnut. They
were all delicious.

The best meal I tried in Prague was braised beef with
dumplings. Just like the city itself, it was perfection!
