I love Spain. It’s a two-and-a-half-hour flight from my home to the glorious beaches, or enticing cities, of one of the most beautiful European cities. It’s almost a hobby of mine to leave the English weather behind and soak up some Mediterranean sunshine.

Last year, my husband and I went on a tour of Andalusia. I’d wanted to visit Granada and see the Alhambra, so we decided to take in some of the other sights of the region as well. Our whirlwind tour started high up in the hills of Mijas, took in the ancient town of Ronda, allowed us to spend time in the vibrant city of Seville, included the incredible mosque at Córdoba, and ended with the iconic Alhambra.

There were so many incredible sights packed into the tour that I’m going to leave the “wow factor” to the pictures and talk instead about the “yum factor”.

There are all kinds of tapas, from a small snack—fried potatoes, nuts or olives—to a full miniature feast including meat and fish.

Our hotel in Seville was just around the corner from El Rinconcillo, Seville’s oldest bar, which has reportedly been serving tapas since 1670. Naturally, we had to sample the menu there. We weren’t disappointed!

Seville also has fabulous ice cream bars (almost on every corner). After extensive research, I can recommend one scoop of dark chocolate and one scoop of hazelnut. Like an up-

market chocolate chip.

Of course, no trip to Andalusia would be complete without a traditional flamenco show. I love the drama and passion of Spain’s national dance and this didn’t disappoint. In the city of Bizet’s Carmen, the Guadalquivir River, and some unique architecture (old and new), the dance has its own infusion of folklore and

  1. It looks like a good place to visit. Not much is ever talked about Spain here compared to other European countries.

  3. Okay, now this sounds like the perfect way to spend a day: watching Flamenco dancers WHILE eating tapas. Mostly, I settle for watching the travel channel while eating a tuna salad sandwich. :)

  11. I love tapas. Even in the heart of an English winter, I can eat tapas and dream of the sunshine! We had the most amazing tapas lunch in Ronda, which we ate at a table overlooking the Spanish countryside. Sigh!

  17. Oh, it was :) Just writing this post made me so nostalgic. Some places have that sort of power, don’t they? You can feel the sense of history in the Alhambra and the surrounding area.
