Last November I took on my second challenge
to raise funds for British Heart Foundation. Not only was it a chance to raise
money for a much-deserved cause and another opportunity to challenge myself, it
was also a place I wanted to experience – for research.
I took on the heat of the Sahara Desert and
trekked 100K over five days. Just being in that environment was a challenge in
itself as I am the kind of person who needs to seek shade at almost every given
opportunity.
My fellow trekkers were amazing people and
very quickly we bonded at each day we set out across the vastness of the
desert. It was arduous and testing both physically and mentally, but each and
every one of us made it across the finishing line. Something our guide said
rarely happens.
My most precious memory of that week was
coming into camp at the end of a long hot day, to find out guides and those
setting up camp all very excited. Behind the dunes next to our camp, a river
was flowing. A storm the previous night had created the river which hadn’t even
been a trickle on the dry river bed a few hours earlier. To sit and watch
something considered so wonderful was a privileged and special moment.
Each day held something special, from climbing to the top of mountains, to trekking up massive sand dunes or the fun we had in camp after trekking. Here are a few more photos of that week, some of them taken by fellow trekkers.
