Visiting Sparkling Hills with Dani Collins!

Until two years ago, I didn’t understand
what the fuss was about visiting a spa.

A ‘spa-day’ sounded to me like something
the rich and famous do, before they walk the red carpet. Or ladies of leisure go
for ‘pampering.’ I regularly visit a registered massage therapist for the aches
and pains that come with working at a computer for a living, but I don’t get
facials or wear a lot of lotions or take therapeutic mud baths.

Two years ago, however, I went to visit my
sister in Winnipeg. She wanted to try something she’d heard friends recommend—Thermea. I was game, but when she told me,
“Everyone said we should plan to spend the day there,” I couldn’t imagine what
the two of us would do.

Well, my friends, you do nothing. That’s
the tranquil joy of visiting a spa.

Thermea is a collection of outdoor pools of
varying temperatures and saunas of varying humidity, heat, and herbal flavors. (I
could live in their eucalyptus steam room.) It’s intended to be a place of
quiet contemplation so at Thermea, attendants walk around with paddles that
read, “Quiet please” on one side and “Thank you” on the other.

Needless to say, five hours of that and I
was hooked. The next time I visited my sister, we brought our husbands—which
means my own husband is now hooked on the spa experience.

Therefore, when he unexpectedly had a few
days off early in February, we thought about flying somewhere warm, but didn’t
really have time for more than a couple of nights. We settled on visiting a spa
closer to home—Sparkling Hill in
Vernon, BC
.

Like Thermea, Sparkling Hill offers beauty
treatments, fitness and ‘serenity’ rooms along with pools and saunas. Unlike
Thermea, which is a day spa, Sparkling Hill is a hotel. That proves highly
convenient when you’re wet and tired and you don’t feel like drying off and getting
dressed and driving home. You just put on your robe and take the elevator to
your room where you have the best nap of your life. When you feel like visiting
the steam rooms or hot pool again, you pop downstairs.

You’re not allowed to take photos in the
spa area so all of these are from our hotel room at Sparkling Hill. Why can’t
you take photos? Well, privacy in general, but at

Sparkling Hill in particular, they offer
‘European Hour.’ Clothing is optional for the last hour of the day and no, we
did not participate. I found putting on a bathing suit so soon after the
December indulgence to be revealing enough, thank you.

Spas aren’t cheap, but compared to the
time, airfare and cost of chasing sunshine, this was a very reasonable
compromise, especially because I was on deadline. Sitting in a hot pool while
snow drifts through the steam is quite a lovely experience and nothing combats
the winter chills like a sauna. I told my husband it felt like sunbathing
without the worry of sunburn.

The best thing was, as we were booking it,
my husband said, “Any chance you can write this off?” I said, “My next book is
a Cinderella theme. I was trying to think of a business she could own that
could be in trouble...”

  1. I have never been to a spa. As a bunch of chatter boxes, I wonder if my friends and I would be able to stay quiet. LOL

  4. I was able to go to a spa one time and it was a very relaxing experience. I had the impression that I had to do all they offered and I didn't want it all, but it was nice that I could do what was comfortable and ditch the rest.

Thanks for sharing your experience and your latest book, Dani!

I think that's why I like it. it's expensive, yes, but within reason and a quick fix of luxury without taking a second mortgage :)

  9. Hi Sophia,
    thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed it and yes, I imagine there is some 'up-sell' at some of them. They are a business, but we're there to relax and self-care so good for you for only doing what you wanted.

  14. I love massages and facials- but have never had a spa day or gone to a spa for a mini vacation. I would LOVE to do it one day though. Sounds amazing. I think the quiet and relaxation would be delightful. Thanks for sharing! :)
