I went with little expectations, having already holidayed on another Canary Island – Lanzarote which I found too barren and touristy. But I fell in love with Gran Canaria. For me it has all I want in a holiday – a relaxed atmosphere, stunning beaches with warm seas, great accommodation and restaurants serving good value food, the friendliest locals I have ever encountered and cool bars for the night time.
My son having fun in the surf!
The peak season in Gran Canaria runs from October through to March when Northern Europeans go there to escape. So when we went in May the Island was relatively quiet which for me was perfect as there was no queues anywhere and accommodation was half the price it is during the peak season. The day time temperatures hovered around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius and at night-time dipped to about 18 to 20. Perfect for myself and my son – both redheads!
There’s so much you can do in Gran Canaria –
We went hiking in the stunning mountainous interiors.
Star gazing.
We also went to the local rooftop cinema and of course attended a water park, where my son used his charm to persuade me to get over my fear of slides and I had the most exhilarating day in a very long time!
And at night time we were able to enjoy gazing out at some of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen.
So, if you are ever in Europe and looking for a good value island destination in the sun, I’d recommend Gran Canaria.

Christmas with the Duke
Reunited with her first love…
For an unforgettable Christmas
Ciara Harris hoped her first Christmas working back at Loughmore Castle would mark a fresh start, but the return of Tom, now Duke of Bainsworth, threatens to uncover feelings she thought long buried. Being snowed in on Christmas Eve with Tom forces Ciara to face the truth—there’s still something magical between them. As the castle’s fires burn warm and festive, so do Tom’s and Ciara’s feelings of hope…
I am not a fan of the sun - but that does look good nonetheless. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGran Canaria sounds awesome and the book sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteA Christmas holiday there could suit you - the temperatures are usually lovely - balmy as opposed to baking!
ReplyDeleteThanks Christin, it was the interior of the Island that I particularly fell in love with.

ReplyDeleteI know Europe but my knowledge of the other continents is pretty poor - I'm hoping to travel much more extensively and rectify this one day. I just have to get my 4 kids through university first!

ReplyDeleteI have a red-haired son! They say they're getting rarer and rarer, but it seems like we know a lot of red-heads.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful island. I would love to visit!
Hopefully one day you'll make it there Sherry. There's so much of the world I want to see but time and resources are holding me back - I'm hoping once the kids have flown the nest I'll be free to travel more. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteI hated my red hair growing up because of teasing at school so I've made a real effort to ensure that my son loves his hair - thankfully so far he's very proud of it and when he was younger if people said he had red hair he would correct them and say it was ginger!
ReplyDeleteWow! Looks and sounds like an amazing vacation. I hadn't heard of Gran Canaria before- but thanks for putting it on my radar. Best of luck to Katrina! :)
