Travel with Rachael Thomas to Skomer Island

 Skomer Island, Wales

I’m slipping back to the summer of 2017 for this post, when I spent a day on Skomer Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales.

The island is famous for the puffins which arrive every summer to breed and having always wanted to see these cute birds I enrolled on a day trip to the island for a photography course. After a short boat ride out to the island, we spent time watching the puffins going in and out of their burrows or trying to get shots of them in flight as they returned from their fishing trips at sea with beaks filled with sand eels.

Skomer Island is a nature reserve a mile from the Welsh coast and has a range of habitats, from sheltered inlets to exposed headlands and once on the island it’s important to stay on the designated pathways. The huge number of puffins, about 165,000 pairs along with resident rabbits and Manx Shearwaters, mean the whole island is covered in burrows.

I had a wonderful time watching the puffins land and then run to their burrows to feed their chicks, hidden safely beneath the surface. I took lots of photographs – some good and some not so good.

It was a privilege to have spent a day on the island and with a maximum of only 250 visitors each day, the wildlife can go about their day. Pausing to pose for the odd photo! I even managed to get to grips with my then new camera and take photographs of a puffin returning from sea.

I’m hoping that once Covid travel restrictions are lifted here in Wales, I can spend another day on the island. Maybe to see it painted blue from all the bluebells in spring or to see the seal pups in the autumn, or even the puffin chicks as they emerge on mass from their burrows.

You can find out more about the island here.
