Dreams Do Come True with P L Harris

In recent years, apart from writing, travelling has become a passion of mine. I love to take photos of locations I can use as inspiration in my books. Having limited travel experience growing up I promised myself a few years back, each year I would visit one of the states in my home country of Australia and one international destination.

Since then I have been lucky enough to see most of Australia, sail around the Greek Islands and visit fabulous locations such as Istanbul, Gallipoli, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Paris, Thailand, Greece and many many beautiful places in America, but the one place I truly love and return to time again is San Francisco.

Each time I visit San Francisco I find new and exciting places to see. I grew up watching movies and I always said it would be great to visit the real locations, one in particular was the movie The Rock and being able to visit Alcatraz was a highlight. I also grew up watching Full House so, of course I had to visit the location of the houses which are called The Painted Ladies. The architecture in this beautiful town is to be admired.

One of the tips that make each journey I take exciting is doing the research prior. Prior to my first visit to San Francisco I did not realise I had booked my accommodation on the edge of one of the not so nice neighbourhoods. I can tell you, as soon as I delved into researching, I quickly changed to a hotel in the bay area. A great move as I was only a 20 minutes’ walk from all the tourist activities. If you’re visiting don’t forget to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Pier 39 and take a ride on a tram.

Tasting a classic Irish Coffee from the Buena Vista in San Francisco was truly amazing. Of course, I have heard this is where the true origins of the Irish Coffee came about, but watching the bartender make 14 in a row and the speed he moved was like a performance in itself. He said they can serve up to 2,500 a day on a busy weekend. Now that is a lot of sugar.

One of the best ways to see a town is to jump on the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus. The best decision I made, and now I do it every where I go. You can see the best locations, take the best pictures and learn about the town and the culture as you go. I highly recommend trying this service.

On my recent visit I was there around Halloween time and being Australian it’s not a holiday that is celebrated as much as in the USA. It was wonderful to see how stunning the displays can be around the town. I cannot wait to go back and see what new features that have alluded my on my previous visits.

  7. I have been to San Francisco one time before. I loved it and it remains one of my favorite trips. I still need to go back- as there is no way to see it all in one trip. Thanks for bringing me down memory lane and giving me new places to look forward to in the future. Best of luck!
