Travel to Hope Shore with Mickey J. Corrigan

If there was a Hope Shore in the state of Florida, it would be a bright sunny town. Many of the buildings would be pastel colored. A long sandy beach lined with spikey cabbage palms would form the eastern border. The beach would have clean sand, high surf, colorful umbrellas and striped lounge chairs for rent.



 

There would be a fishing pier too, as well as oceanfront restaurants and bars with live music. Tee shirt shops would sell postcards, flip-flops and suntan lotion. Kids skateboarding on the brick boardwalk would dodge retirees on their daily walks. Lovers would wrap tanned arms around one another, kissing passionately under palm trees swaying in a gentle sea breeze. Tourists from all over the world would enjoy the warmth and beauty of another day in this lovely beach town.





Sound wonderful? I think so. But I have only traveled to Hope Shore in my imagination. Because the town doesn't exist in Florida, only in Project XX, my new crime novel. Still, I know exactly what it looks like. Where the traffic backs up on the main street. Where the parking lots fill up with surfers. The exclusive developments that house the wealthy. The small homes and apartment buildings near the railroad tracks. The beachfront condo buildings and their manicured lawns.



Isn't it lovely? One would think life couldn't be nicer than it is in Hope Shore.

Ha. Don’t be fooled by Hope Shore's pretty, sweet exterior. Beneath the surface, something dark is bubbling. And it is about to explode.

Project XX 

In 2012, a deranged grad student dressed as the Joker shot and killed dozens of movie goers at a Batman film opening in Colorado. Gun violence is so out of control in America that it has become a cruel joke.

Unlike most of Mickey Corrigan's novels, Project XX made itself known to her at that time, demanding to be written. Usually she researches, prepares, then writes. In this case, she wrote first, then did the research on gun violence, female violent crime, and school/mass shootings.

Males are almost always the perpetrators of mass shootings. But females are fully capable of shocking acts of violence and, in the US, military-style weapons are as easy to access as a new hairstyle.
