Travel to Skye Island, Scotland with Andie Brock

Recently my husband and I spent a few days on the Isle of Skye. An island off the west coast of Scotland, it really is the most beautiful place.



Over the years I’ve had many holidays in this part of the world. Although not Scottish, my father was raised in a little town called Thurso, about as far north as you can go on the mainland. My grandfather was a customs and excise officer there but he died before I was born. Dad always had a huge fondness for Scotland and as kids we had lots of family holidays there. But this was the first time I had been to Skye – and I wasn’t disappointed.



It’s a wonderfully wild and rugged sort of place. Full of waterfalls and craggy mountains, shimmering lochs and ancient castles, it has beautiful white sandy beaches too, sprinkled with tiny pink cowrie shells. But more than that, there is something magical about Skye. We visited Fairy Glen, where the landscape has weird cone-shaped hills that surely must be the home of real fairies. J

 

Then there is the mysterious Fairy Pools, where a series of waterfalls cascade into seriously deep pools coloured vivid shades of blue and green.  

Perhaps there is one drawback -  the weather. There is an awful lot of it! We experienced howling gales, brilliant sunshine and a violent hail storm – all in the space of one hour! But maybe this is what makes the Isle of Skye so special. This is what gives it the dramatic skies, the chasing shadows and the luminous rainbows.

It is wild and it is elemental. And I’m sure anyone who has ever been lucky enough to visit Skye, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Andie Brock started inventing imaginary friends around the age of four. Her family like to remind her that they frequently had to make room for Paris or Sella or Decoratia around the dinner table or on long car journeys.
